Many of the well-known major car hire companies can be found both in Lima and at the busy Callao Jorge Chavez Airport. In general, renting a car in Lima is rarely cheap, with many hidden charges, such as mileage, insurance and more. A deposit is always payable via credit card and drivers must be 25 years old or more. 4WD jeeps are particularly expensive and many rental operators are reluctant to rent basic cars for those intending to drive outside of the city.
Your own country's driving licence is usually acceptable when renting a car in Peru. Whilst Lima is within driving distance of many popular tourist attractions, most are a long way away and the roads can be poorly signposted, with potholes and few fuel stations. When parking in Lima and Peru in general, be sure to use a car park with security guards, which a number of hotels provide.
